SHONA YOUNG

December 8, 2009

Dear Dr. Powers

During the semester, I found my self-changing over the course of the weeks. We wrote many blogs entries on using our five senses and by doing that it helped me to understand that if you can actually feel, see, touch, taste, and smelt the object described in the paper, you have a better understanding of what the paper really means. I thought that using our five senses in the beginning of the semester was pointless and a waste of my time but as we progressed, I found out that the more you describe and explain the less you have to later in the process of writing the paper.

The blog that I feel like I did the best on with describing the five senses would be The Shoe blog. It was on of the easier one for me to write because it was something that I cared about and that I have been with for many of years and know everything about. We also learned how to used cultures and the way people act in our papers and explain reasoning why they may have acted the way they did. The one blog that we had to write was on the movie Gattica. We had to use how society controls us and how it would be if all humans we programmed to be the perfect human being and be placed in a job by your genes and personality. I feel like using our knowledge in all of papers will make them more interesting and with adding other influences to it would have other opinions and ideas for the paper. With having your peers in the class review your paper in front of you and having them explain your mistakes made me feel better about my paper and knowing that other people can understand your own ideas but want to make them better and add their own touch.

In this course I feel better about the way I write, knowing I will never be perfect or that A paper writing, but I know I can write about a topic with feeling and explanation for other readers to go off of. If I were to be placed in English 101 and not English 100, I feel that I would of failed the course due to not being able to describe how I felt or how other material objects mean to us. I also feel as if I can write a paper and not have too many rough drafts with a million markings on it, instead I will take the time to make the first copy the best that I can make it. While writing I will write down all my ideas on a blog or a notebook so that if I ever need to reference it I will be able to have access to it.

Even thouh we have the right of speec, we are still afriad t speak the truth. We ll have ou own ideas it is wheather we have enough couage to speak what we feel around people. we have ou friends that we talk to and bounce ideas off of but there are only a few people we tel our true feelings to. We are alwasy being judged even if we do not think we are. Everyone has their own opinions about everything. We dress the way people want us to so we can fit in. Dress th way you want to and be your own person and let society know that we can b who ever we want to be. we have to stand up for what we believe in so that people do not walk all over us. Everyone we talk to is also controlled by the people surrounding us. We try not to mae us look bad by talk to someone on the lower end of the “poular” scale tha we are all worried about.

The movie American History X was an excellent move to get the point that once you start something you can not get out of it. Derek was the kid who got good grade but also who has a bad temper due to his bad. The point that he was trying to get across to his brother and his old gang was that it is their time to get out while they still have their lives, but they are all brain washed and do not know any different. Derek knows the feeling of being a part of a group. You feel secure and safe but most times its a group that will put you in danger. He was put through a thing that he did not want to experience what happened to him. He is so worried about his family even when he was getting into trouble he was there for them but also putting them in to trouble. He finally learned that every one is the same even thought it took murder and years in jail but he soon learned that you have to treat every one the same even if they are rude.

Have you ever saw a group of people who were to theirselves and did not want anyone else in their lives. Well welcome to high school clicks. Where i am from our football team was what everyone loved even though we were awful and only one maybe 2 games but that student section would be full every friday night to cheer on friends, boyfriends and brother.

The football team is just a huge group of annoying guys who think they are cool in our school beacuse they can tackle some 200 pound guy to the ground and the crowd will cheer. Our football players would only talk to their team mates. The only way they would talk to you is if you were a girlfriend cheerleader or a sister. In mind i thought they were immature and over . even thought no one really talked to them that much everyone who wanted to be them would talk them up and try to get on their good side and maybe be that one person who could be in the group that was not a team mate but they guys would just make fun of them and embarrass them in front of everyone.

Football players to me are stuck up and think the whole world revolves around them and football. Sorry to burst their bubble but many people think the same way i do and hope they can see what they really are. They have their own table at lunch they walk in groups and they all wear the same clothes and all look exactly like each other big some fat some pure muscle, rude, and most of they were the people trying to get you to do their home work because they had a long practice and were to tired.

I have a best friend who i exactly like me but we are from two opposite place. I was born in in Pittsburgh, Pa and she was born in in Antioch, Ca. As we all know the life styles in each state are different but i came to realize its not much about the life styles its how you were brought up and how your personality is. We have so much in common it’s unbelievable. We both like the same things even though there are some things we think differently about but we still like. With her being from across the states and in a place that is so relaxed and me being from a place where you have to be on a time schedule and have to get tasks done at a certain time, you might think how could we be alike or even be friends. I love the fact that she is from California. I get to see a totally different culture when i go to visit her and you hear a lot of different music and language you would hear in Pa. Her being raised in a community where the school have a mass amounts of students and every race possible attends but here where i went you may see an African American here and a Latino there but it was not usual for our school. It was a culture shock to her when she came to visit and go to school here. We are from two totally opposite place that will never be alike but in the end i found a friend how has the same personality i do 3000 miles away from me.

I also see how my family and her family get along. her mother is so full of energy and always on the move and her children are laid back and have a mind set that things will get done when the time is right. Our family are two opposite groups of people but we find out selves around eat other more than anything as almost were were one huge family from different parts of America.

It is one of those days where you think everything is going you way. Passing your midterms, and feeling great by having pressure lifted off of your shoulders. All of a sudden my day turns on me. Playing a game in p.e. having fun almost time to go home and enjoy my winter break and i find my self laying on the floor. i just tore my act. I was a freshman in high school getting ready to start my track season and have a great time doing it. My luck i end up hurt and having to do months of physical therapy and surgery.

For a year and a half i was in physical therapy. Working my hardest to get where i wanted to be to get back on the run way. I had to build my muscles up before i had surgery; due to that i spent another two months before surgery working out and getting my leg stronger so i would not have any problems getting that muscle back. My physical therapy was not leasing to me. Having people making you do exercises that put you in pain even when i’m only lifting my leg or moving it side to side. We are all use to doing that kind of stuff every day but for me that task was hard and i thought i would never be able to come back to the person i was. Finally my day to become some one new is coming up. I am working my hardest to get every inch of my leg strong. MAking my physiacl therapist proud and excited to see how i will be after my surgery.

A loud noise starts going off. It’s four o’clock in the morning, and it time for my surgery. I was sick to my stomach, scared like a little kid lost in a super market. I did not know what to expect out of this. I knew i would be in pain, but for how long and what kind of pain. Everything and anything was running through my head as i was sitting in the waiting room getting ready to be wheeled in and put under. My heart was racing almost if i were in a race. Trying not to panic and freak out why nurses are sticking me with needles and telling me every things going to be okay hunny. My brother in the room beside me getting the same surgery as me, made me feel better. Brother and sister going in as a team and coming out as a team as i thought of it. It’s my time. While i am getting wheeled in to the operating room all i hear is beeping noises and i see bright lights and stacks upon stack of metal trays. These rooms really look the the ones on t.v. i said to my self, half unconscious. The doctor is ready to put me under and the last thing i hear before i an out is hunny you have ….

The surgery went well. I am about 9 months out of it and making my way back the where i use to be. Physical therapy is getting tougher and my knee is just not getting beter. All i know is something i not right. Heading back the the doctor and hearing news i did not want to hear at that point. Shona you have to have another surgery. I thought that this meant another year off of training and another year of pain and disappointment. To my advantage i only had to get a scope to get excess scar tissue out. Time passes and i am finally getting to the point where i want to be. my doctoer finally stops my physical therapy and tells me to talk to my coach and start doing easy work outs. I Start to run i feel amazing but at the same time a little uneasy and terrified to tear my acl again.

It the start of a new tack season. The weather is freezing out and i am out of shape. Our practices were hard and my knee was sore. Always icing after practice and asking why do i do this to myself. Season is finally here and i am ready to show my team mates what i have to offer to the team this year.

If i could be anything in the world i would want to be someone who could make people who they are. In our society i am tired of people judging everyone and trying to the the big bad wolf. Everyone has their own way of dealing with problems and some tend to pick on people who they think are lower than them. People who are thier selves tend to stand up straighter and have confidence and you can pick those people out of a crowd.

I want to be the person who people can count on the help them be some one unique but their selves. Our world i based off of trying to be the best we can be by lying and cheating but in the end those people are unhappy with that they have done. Yeah they have money but they do not have love or happinesses that they want. In order for me to do this i would have to find people who are trying to be some one else and break them of their habits so they can make the best of the person they should be.

Why would you want to be a fake person. Those people are just liked because they fit in to the norm not because they are their selves. The people thy hang out with are the same people so they feed off of each other and soon they will become one and be a group of people not just one person. I want to make a change and help all of those people who want to change but are to afraid of what other people think or have a hard time trying to find out who they really are.

Making a change in the way people thing and act could help out the world dramatically. Every one can be who they want to be not people they are forced to be. Be that person who is a goof and wears bright clothing and runs around screaming things. At least he is his own person not a follower a leader. I just want to make a change in someone!

There was one point in my life that i thought i was never going to get through. I had acl reconstructive surgery in 9th grade due to and injury in the gym. I went to three doctors to get opinions and see which doctor would be the best. They told me the only way i could get surgery was if i were to be done growing, well to my advantage, i was. We finally found a doctor who cared and was one to get the right help i needed. I was in physical therapy for about a year and a half after the surgery and it seemed like nothing i did was going to get be back on the run way. I would be there for hours and hours doing thing i couldn’t do and getting frustrated with it. My physical therapist told me it would take time but i could do it. The way i was thinking i was never going to be able to walk normal again. After all the hard work i did for about nine months i had to get another one for scar tissue. That made feel awful. I felt like everything i was doing was making me worse. My brother had the same thing done to him on the same day and six months after he was back to normal but nope not me i was always unhappy with the progress. I tole myself that i was never going to be able to play sports again or be able to have a normal life. All the doctors assured me that i would be okay i was just a slow healer but i felt as if i were to be doing something wrong. With everything i went through with my knee every thing turned out to be better i just put so much negative attitude in the picture and made it worse.

The movie that we watched in class was about the perfect people. Everyone wishes they were perfect but in life there is no such thing. In this life parents have the choice to make their baby the way they want them. To me making your child perfect and picking everything in their life instead of letting them make mistakes and figuring out life as they move forward. This movie also shows how people in the world would change their identity or life to have a better one. we can not choose what happens to us even if we lave loads of money to our name. Everyone in our world should have the same rights as everyone a=to get what they want it depends on how you approach it. The future life is all perfect and the ones that turn out bad are looked down on and are the people who could change the world
